I'd skip Koh Samui and go to Koh Phangan (where the Full Moon Party is) and also Koh Tao, which is a lot less crowded. You should also check out Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta in Southern Thailand - they are big backpacker scene places too and have beautiful beaches, lots of bars, and great scuba diving if you're interested in that.
I wrote a guide to backpacking in Thailand here if you need some more ideas:

March and April is the hot season in Thai, the best time temperature wise is from Oct to Feb. Kho Sumoi is called PatPong on Sea by Thai people, patpong being the red light district of Bangkok. It,s commercial and not really a back packer place to go. Head for KoaSanRoad in Bangkok, before you set out into the rest of Thailand. Reason being, thats were all the backpackers stay and start out from, there you will find backpackers of your own age and budget, you can find out a lot of info from everyone about the cheapest and best places to backpack. It,s a safe and cheap area in Bangkok. Have a nice tour.

Its a year or so since I was in Ko Samui and it was too commercial for me then. I agree that N Thailand- Chang Mai etc are more interesting ( inland no beaches of course). Do some websurfing to get a feel of which places appeal to you. The Lonely Planet Thorntree Thailand pages will give you a better picture than Answers. As to weather check out the weather pages as weather for Samui in March may be getting into the very hot season. I prefer Nov to Jan.

If you are backpacking then stay on Chaweng beach where the action is but only for a couple of nights. Then take the ferry to Koh Phangnan. It is a backpackers paradis. Samui is a bit Kitchy tourist for me. It is a lot of middle aged Europeans in speedos and prostitutes and Go Go bars.

Full of back packers like you. Great place. Go north to Chang Mei also. Get a better class of back packer there.

I agree with Officer_b. However, if you go towards Lamai, the sleazy bits get a bit less. Good beaches and good cheap wholesome food.
