I want to know what are the legal ways to get a green card and work in my current occupation, without relying on an employer to file an application (or getting married...)
current status: H1B

Thanks

go back to your country and contact the US embassy and then have them give you the proper paperwork to fill out and then wait your turn like every other LEGAL immigrant does . Oh sure your company may have to wait for you to get legal before they can get you to do some US citizen's job for less money and thus screw his family over but you'll feel better knowing you did it the right way. So the company won't save $50,000 dollars right away too bad.

Since you are already legally working in the USA (H1), go to:

http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/1GreenCard.htm

Look at the options, and choose "How can I immigrate to the USA".
There should be links to download the necessary forms, which you have to fill in, and pay a fee.

An immigration lawyer (See your local yellow pages) might be able to help. At least he/she will give you an honest assessment of your chances.

Good luck!

That is a question for the INS people. In some states, they have programs for people who have been here for a while who want to become citizens, an amnesty program. Check and see if you may qualify for this status, and good luck to you.

Apply for the Diversity Lottery. Just follow the instructions...and don't pay people to do this for you!
