You can chat with opposite sex, if that's for some good/important purpose like to get some information, etc. You can't just chat like chit chat. Still, I would recommend you to confirm this with Ulmas or their websites.

To the best of my knowledge the Quran does not say anything about chatting on the net.
If you want an example from the life of the prophet, you might know that his first marriage to Khadija was a love marriage and both knew each other well.

Inna mal a'amal bin niyyat. Actions are judged according to intesion. if you are having a decent chat with no intesion what so ever and the chat is health then it is ok. but remember satan is there is lure you into bad things so avoid anything that will tempt you.
