I've been reading a bit about jewish law and i'm just wondering if an agreement to marry after a period is enough to make a jewish marriage lawful.

if so infomation on the role of the husband (for curiosities sake) is appreciated

If you only agreed to marry this woman and a year has passed without any ceremony, you have not truly committed. She is only your wife if you marry her by Jewish ceremony. The duration period you agreed to after one year is unknown, but there must be a ceremony if she is Jewish no matter what denomination of Jewish sect she is. There are many: Orthodox, Conservative, Reform,
Re constructionist, Liberal, Karaite and Alternative. Finding out which one she is essential if you don't already know. Either way, this woman will need many things from you first in order to show her that your agreement is sealed and you are truly committed. You need to get her a ring to start. Symbolizing the beginning of your agreement it's called betrothal, kiddushin or erusin. Money....you better have some because that is only the beginning. Best wishes and good luck!

If you married a Jewish woman than after a year you are still married. There is a custom that for the first year of marriage the man and wife should be together for the year, then the man could go an long trips without the wife and vise versa.

this can actually be a complicated Talmudic question.

what your talking about is the first part of marriage, Kiddushin that is preformed when the man takes an object of value and gives it to a woman as a sign that they are now married.

This union can be immediate or in the case you are describing can be time delayed or rely on conditions.

but to cut straight to the point if you were to make a vow that you will marry a particular woman in one year and fail to do so you would not be married but rather you will have violated your vow, but if you were to marry her but under the condition that it would only come into effect in one years time then I do believe that you would be married.

this is of course if you have satisfied of the halachic needs of Kidushin
