i think it's a good thing, as you're not easy in any way and he likes that.
i would think that you two are deep thinkers and have world view conversations, yeah?
but as for him saying he loves you in a round-about way, i'm not sure on this. i think he is still trying to work some things out about you and that he is trying to let you know that he's interested to get to know you more.

Most men like a challenge so take it as a compliment. Especially if he followed it up with the deep connection comment. He is in love with u.
There is a slight chance he could be trying to say nicely that u are being slightly high maintenance at the time he says this to you. If ur in a situation where he says this call him on it lightly and see where it goes so u know for sure.
