brambly- thats an interesting observation. However there has to be a middle path somewhere. Public nudity is not allowed & now full public covering seems to be going the same way.

jsbrunett- The issue is where to call stop. Taking it further what would you say to allowing each religious group to have its own personal law.

ajmal/farkas- see the fact is that people in Britain are governed by laws which are not based on any religion. This does curtail the religious freedom of people (for example if a muslim man marries twice in Britain its a crime). However I do not see anyone protesting.

Further, while hijab is mandated by religion, the full covering of the burqua owes its origin to the patriarchial tribal societies of Arabia.

Ajmal- try to see the issue from another prism-
Suppose in your country the christian minority:
-carried out terror attacks against the local muslims in protest against some policy of your govermment.
-started living in closed ghettoes so much so that the muslims were afraid to enter there.
-proposed that christian laws derived from the bible be imposed.
-a local poll found that one fourth of them (and not just a tiny minority) supported terrorism

How would the Government & the local muslims react to such a provocation?

I think banning the burqua would make it harder for men, fathers, brothers and husbands to abuse their female relatives, it's not a religious requirement only a tradition and many women are intimidated into wearing it. Also it looks frightening seeing these ghost women whose identity has been erased and replaced with a cypher for something vaguely Islamic walking toward you. Ban them!
Generally people are not allowed to walk around wearing masks or full face balaclava's in Britain (remember the IRA), they will tend to be stopped by the police in city streets anyway, how do we know if it's a man a woman or a non-Muslim criminal under the burqua in disguise and using it for nefarious purposes..the perfect cover isn't it!.

If there is freedom of speech then there should be freedom of will and faith too. What's it with you?I live in a Muslim country people of other faiths including Christians are free here. They do whatever their religious teachings are so I think its wrong to force others quit their free will.
Which society has the highest rape figures, teenage pregnancy, single mothers, adultery(unless u support adultery), and homeless? These are exactly the kind of things that Islamic rules (Hijab) would help avoid not that I mean imposing the law in Britain but individual Muslims only if they like. Live and let live others the way they want.

at first, he did not ask them to eliminate their headscarfs, he asked them to eliminate their veils. Secondly, i could prefer to show out the veil is a cultural merchandise of outfits, not a non secular one. Veils at the instant are not specified interior the Islamic faith and maximum branches of Islam do not positioned on them. besides, speaking to somebody mutually as having your face coated is very rude here, as you are able to't see their face and subsequently communique is tougher and you are able to't tell their emotions. i does not sense delicate speaking to somebody in a veil interior a similar way i does not sense delicate speaking to somebody donning a Balaclava, exceptionally if i did not understand him properly. Straw's different element became that the veils function a visual barrier between cultures. How can we are hoping to have racial tolerance and a society the place all races stay mutually peacefully while some Muslim females close themselves off from something of the international subsequently? If something the veil is a reason for racism. I heard a controversy that, extremely, the veil is a logo of the quite orthodox component to Islam; the section that subjugates females. those females do not all go with to positioned on a Burka or veil, yet extreme rigidity is positioned on them by using the orthodox families and societies they stay in. those orthodox societies additionally instruct that females would not have a existence of their very own, and different issues that are thoroughly and inherently sexist. Our u . s . a . has regulations against sexism and advertising sexual equality yet some areas of Islam contravene a lot of those spectacularly; or a minimum of in the event that they at the instant are not extremely breaking any regulations they are breaking a code of our society: that females ought to have equivalent rights. Turkey, a Muslim u . s . a ., realised there became no actual way they might give up that yet ban the veil, and that they did, because it became the only way they might give up the sexism and subjugation of ladies and create sexual equality. in my view I accept as true with Jack Straw.

The Bush and Blair administrations are gradually raping liberties, freedoms and constitutions. It is said that those who sacrifies liberty for security achieve neither. We sacrificed so much for this phony "war on terror" that the politicians are now involving their own hatred and prejudice (such as Straw here) and making new arbitrary, hate-based laws because we gave in many times. We deserve it.

Seems rather contradictory, doesn't it? True tolerance and open-mindedness would have you accept whatever people choose to wear. In my view, banning the burqa is just as intolerant and closed-minded as mandating it.

Well, I'm not British, but I disagree. People cannot be banned from expressing the outer symbols of their faith, as long as these do not interfere with other people's rights.

Ridiculous. They should have more respect for other peoples' religions. What next, Christians can't wear crosses? Priests can't wear black suits? What?
That's just silly.
