Usually they will charge you with the strongest charge only so that you cannot plead down to the lesser charges, otherwise, after having heard your "Not Guilty" plea, the District Attorney can go back and read the report and say: well, this guy after having struck the officer, resisted arrest, once he was cuffed and put in the back seat, he kicked out one of the windows on the patrol car, then once they got to the station for processing, he kicked a computer over causing it to break, then once he was put into the holding cell, he took his one free hand and undid his pants and defecated on the walls" hey, you never know, I'm not saying you did, but I'm saying that when you hit a uniformed dude who has a gun, you probably did something pretty silly before and after you hit him, cause you had to feel that you had a good reason to hit him or "defend" yourself, but it's not all bad news, this just means the DA believes that your assault on PO case is weaker than the other charges and he's just planning for you to be found not guilty for the assault and guilty on the "multiple Criminal Mischief's and the "Resisting Arrest"...again not that those are your charges

Let's look at this regardless of your innocence or guilt. You are charged with assaulting a police officer, pretty serious crime considering they enforce the rules. Second, you pled not guilty. Of course they added charges. Go find a helluva lawyer.

Of all the people you could have chosen to assault...you chose a police officer. Sadly, you are now a candidate for the Darwin Award.
I am surprised they only added 5 new charges. Get ready...it is going to be a bumpy ride.

In most states the filing agency is the local District Atty. After a person is arrested they file their reports and request certain charges to be filed according to the facts as they have laid them out in their investigation and reports. But the D.A., after reading all reports and doing any necessary follow-up investigation, may decide to amend the charges or file additional ones as they see fit and have the evidence to fit their filing criteria. This is usually do they have a strong enough case to prove to a jury beyond a reasonable doubt, if not, they probably won't file, and may send it back to the law enforcement agency for further investigation.

Everything else aside, YOU ASSAULTED A POLICE OFFICER! What do you think is going to happen? They are going to do everything they can to you and rightfully so. I hope the cops, the prosecutor, the judge and the other inmates screw you more.

Get a lawyer, or the cops will use every trick on you.
They can assault anyone, provoke and instigate for the need to show force, violate civil rights, and get away with anything just because nobody taped it.
Get representation

You should not have hit the officers in the first place and then you would have no charges.
Good luck and save your money for an attorney for when you get out because regardless you are going to jail.

From what I've seen, most of the time, they will charge you with something first, so they can get something against you, then they will add more when they feel that they've got enough to add them. I think it's gay, and that they should charge you all at once, and not add anything after.

while you were fighting with the police you must have done other things, and they are charging you with them, think back to what happened, did you stop when they told you, did you run or threaten them, why did they approach you in the first place, a traffic ticket, or cause trouble somewhere..........
