Do you have a Christmas tree? Do you exchange gifts? Why? It's a pagan holiday (in Scandinavia, that's when the Norse sacrified to the Gods. Decent year, horses; bad year, slaves; rotten year, kings) that the Christians took over.

But yes, I celebrate Christmas, I even go to church sometimes on Christmas day. Why? Because it's tradition, that's why. Holidays are all about traditions.

Edit: Why wouldn't a true Atheist even accept a gift???

Not all atheists do, my husband is atheist and to be honest he doesnt care much for christmas at all,

also there is a difference from Christmas, and the celebration of christs birthday........... Christmas originally started out as a pagan holiday, that had nothing to do with Jesus ......... later on it was combined to celebrate Jesus' birth, but that was much later........

now people are getting picky and are trying to take jesus out of christmas all over again, thats why now people are replacing the word christmas with "Holidays"

so just think of it this way, there is "Christmas" the celebration of the birth of jesus, and there are the "Holidays" which atheists and some others will celebrate

Why do several Christians celebrate Halloween?

To me Christmas haves nothing to do with religion. It is a time for the family to get together and exchange gifts. Just like on birthdays.

Old habits die hard.

Also, BTW, Christmas, is a pagan holiday, the date of Christ's birth was not on the 25th of December, but when a lot of pagans switched over to Christianity, they did not want to change the dates for holidays, so the 25th became the new birthday of Jesus Christ.

From the Wikipedia:

"The date of celebration is merely traditional, and the great majority of scholars agree that the actual birthdate of Jesus is unknown."

Why do Christians skip the thought process and ask stupid questions?

I see the same ludicrous questions posted over and over and over. It's not that hard to understand if you ponder it a while.

You're way off on this one.. Christmas is derived from a Pagan holiday and was adopted by Christians around 300 BC when Constantine aimed at unifying a religion. He also plagerized the resurection, and the idea of the holy trinity, among other things...

Besides it's fun to open presents from loved ones...Atheist just don't go to Church once a year at Midnight mass and call themselves religious...

Last Christmas season, just days before Christmas, a co-worker went on the most blasphemous rant to me about Jesus, saying things I won't even repeat about His parentage. A few days later, the same person was running around hugging everyone saying "Merry Christmas". Go figure.

Although Christmas is a religious holiday, many people celebrate the season without giving any reverence or acknowledgment to the reason we celebrate. Christmas has become so distorted because it is such big money maker for many in retail and commercial sect.
Although I am a Christian and I do celebrate and enjoy Christmas I don't allow images of Santa Claus or a Christmas Tree only Items that promote the birth of Christ

for many atheists, christmas is treated as afamily holiday just like thanksgiving with the exception that presents are exchanged. Usually, this is done for the children, but it becomes a tradition even as the kids grow into adults and the cycle continues.
