Without knowing what car you have and what stereo is fitted, this might not apply but I have used adpaters fro my last two cars (Renault Clio 2 W reg and VW Golf Y reg) both of them have factory fitted stereos with a socket on the back to fit CD multichangers.
Connects 2 make adapters for most cars. These plug into the multichanger socket and give a phono socket to plug your mp3 player in.
The trouble is, you lose your multichanger if you have one, but then, why do you need one if you have your mp3s?
Don't think if your car doesn't have a multichanger that you won't have a socket. There's still a chance. Go to www.connects2.com and have a look round.
I tried an FM transmitter and thought it was terrible, it kept needing to be retuned. These adapters are great, the sound quality is excellent. Far better than a tape adapter.
Hope this might help.

The radio transmitters can cause problems as you drive around as some radio stations ie radio 1 change frequencies around the country so may have to keep retuning the transmition signal. Also in areas like London there are very few clear bandwidths to tune in to.
If you have a tape deck in your car you can get an adapter that looks like a cassette with a wire hanging out that works fine.

You can do what ive done:
Get a Wireless Radio Transmitter. Its GREAT ! Just conect the headphone jack -on the device- to your IPOD and choose your own Frequency -> then itll play it on you radio !!!
Its just around 10 quid MAX. Small, easy to use, DEFINATELY WORTH IT.

not unless you have an "AUX" input on your deck
What I would suggest is getting a RF transmitter that will run off of 12 v DC or off AA batteries.
something like this should work
