there's a really good brand of food that is only sold in specialty places - but it is REALLY good for them. its very high quality and feeds them exactly what they need. most cats will loose weight just eating it. it's called innova. I put some links below to pet food sites that tell you about innova and other pet foods.

also, this is counterintuitive - but give him more wet food... he'll eat less dry - i put alink about wet food down there too. also, dont leave the dry food just sitting out. just put out a little at certain times. make sure he excercises too of course.

You should put the cat on Science Diet R/D. You can usually only get it from a veterinarian but it's a prescription diet that causes the cat to lose weight. It's a little pricey but it's worth it because if the cat is really overweight, it's very unhealthy and reduces their life span. Also, you want to feed the cat tiny bits a bunch of times a day. Never feed the cat a large amount and let it sit there the whole day.

Buy "weight managment" food (aka diet food) for adult cats, or put your kitty on a senior formula cat food, and stop free-feeding. Place the bowl down for 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the evening, and let your cat eat then. Always provide fresh water, however always keeping a food bowl down encourages most housecats to eat WAY too much. A healthy housecat's weight should be between 7-12lbs.

Obviously the basic answer is to do the same thing for you cat that you would do for yourself in order to lose weight.

Reduce the amount of food,or use the lite stuff and get the critter to exercise. Easier said than done....

Some other unique techniques
- take some big rubber bands and strap them around the cat's mouth
- buy some amphetimes from the local drug dealer
- teach you cat to bingand purge; see if you can teach him to be bulimic

As for exercise...
-buy or borrow a big, mean cat chasing pit bull and lock them in a room together
- buy one of those Stair Masters or indoor running ramps and put the cat on a running program.

OK... Obviously I was just kidding. You already know that just like you or I, your pet has to eat less and if possible play with him/her in the house and chase him around as one of the other respondents suggested. Years ago, my wife brought 3 cats into my (our) house when we were married. One was named Bear and weighed 32lbs. I immediately assisted getting his weight down. So it can be done.

Good luck

Exercise with your cat, it's like exercising for urself (Yes, it is hard....) And when choosing a light diet cat food for you cat, choose one that contains a high percentage of fibre and low fat. The lower ends that they sell in the grocery store like Purina, Iams, etc. has a very low percentage of fibre. My cats are on Hill's Science Diet now which contains 12% of fibre. It's the one that I found with the lowest fat and highest percentage of fibre. If you want them to lose weight, the fibre in the food is one thing that make them feel full. Go by the recommended feeding amount and reduce it as your cat's weight goes down!

go walking with your cat at a certain time every other day and let her chase you home from the walk. Both of you will receive a work out then maybe you want to eliminate the most fattening item from feeding time or give her a smaller portion of each dish that she likes instead of a full serving. Good Luck. Check with your vet if all else fails.

Science diet has a good "light" version. I have the same problem with my male cat. He is a whopping 22 pounds. I'm afraid for his health. He's been neutered so his only real pleasure is food.

Put it on weight control food and chase it around the house for exercise.

The most effective, like in us human, is to cut back on his food. Don't do it drastically but reduce the portions a little at a time so his stomach gets used to the reduced amt.....you will certainly see results! :-)

And yes..go for the 'light; food.......of course
