After i had I 131 radiation therapy for thryoid cancer, I had a scan done to look for any uptake. There was some uptake found in my liver and kidneys. I don't understand what that means. I don't understand my doctors accent, and have no clue what he was trying to explain to me.

What does that mean for my kidneys and liver? Could that be cancerous? Or was there damage from the radiation? What is the big deal with uptake being there?

I am guessing iodine uptake.. Sorry I don't understand the whole thing.. The cancer in the thryoid shows uptake of iodine i think. But I don't know how that works for the rest of the organs?

I asked about staging, the doc said it was complicated and he could not give me an accurate staging since my age did not match my tumor size. I had radiation only, no chemo. I had a total thryoidectomy, and my tumor was larger than expected. To my knowlege it was encapsulated.

Hi

Before I answer your question it is important to know -
1. Type of your cancer?
2. Stage of your Cancer?
3. Was it a whole body scan which was done for you?

If you had a whole body scan then it is usually done to demonstrate metastases (Spread).
If your scan says that there is "uptake" in your liver and kidneys then it means that there is a metastases of your Thyroid cancer.

Do speak to your doctor before coming to any conclusions.

Finding uptake in your kidney and liver could imply that the cancer could have spread to those organs from the thyroid.See your doctors again to explain to you without using medical jargon.
