when i'm on hydrocortisone, I feel so clear headed and happy and free of stress- but all studies relate cortisol to stress... i dont understand this

pharmacologic doses of cortisol can do this because there is a difference between good stress and bad stress... so now your body has external cortisol to help the system cope with all kinds of stress. of course you can't stay on it very long though.

It is not that the cortisol causes the stress, but that the stress causes increased cortisol release.

all it does is relieve swelling, i doubt you are on what you think you are on, or at least not for the reason you think you are on it.
