I'm looking into becoming a K-9 Sheriff and I wondered if the K-9's come with a name or do you get to name them yourself. I'd hope you get to name them yourself.

It depends at what stage the agency gets the dogs at. Most come with basic obedience training and have already been given names. Changing the name is discouraged as it confuses the dog and makes further training more difficult. If the agency somehow gets a very young dog that has not started training yet, then the officer can choose a name. Obviously the name has to be appropriate. You don't see many police K-9's named "Killer" or "Fluffy"

Most of the time the city picks the names of the dog since the dog belongs to the city, however I think if you were to talk with the city they may be able to work something out with you so you can call him/her what you would like. I hope this helps, and good luck!!!

no.the dog is named in school and keeps that name until it dies. the name can be chosen by many methods. i work for u.s. customs and border protection and when they get a litter of puppies they assign a letter of the alphabet and ask all workers in the agency to choose a name and the best ones according to them are chosen. they are then raised sent to school and then assigned a k-9 officer

Some do, but some dogs are reassigned from other officers, so those who already have names, will keep their original names, because it would be confusing to the dog to be called by any other name, toher than the one they are used to.

Typically, no they do not.

If your agency is buying the dogs already trained then the dog will already be named(but you could rename him with minimal problems).

If your agency is buying puppies and placing them in foster homes until you reclaim them for protection/drug/search etc. training then they could already be named or you could name them.

At my employer the canines are experienced to flow outdoors, and not in the vehicle. i think they occasionaly have injuries. I particularly have considered our canines get very excited and that they'll generally flow #2 basically after a bite or construction seek.

You don't get to name them. They are named before they are trained.
