In a roundabout way yes... I believe guilt and paranoia are the causes of most mental illness and religions breed guilt and paranoia like they're going out of style.

No, not religion, and mental illness is being way oversold to provoke people into treatmeant and drugs. We could do much better with better diets and habits that are effecting our well being, we live in a state of contradiction, unrealistic expectations and are forcing a way of life that goes against our grain which is why we find it so difficult to be at peace and happy with our lives. we have too many outside influences that we allow to dictate how we behave, those influences are just pimping us.Mankind is getting way out of sync and we just havent found our place in the world or universe yet. we are lost puppies following losers.that is enough to make anyone have issues dealing with reality. unless we overcome the obstacles we will not grow with the strength needed to take on our little peice of the world. don't be so quick to buy into the mental illness craze at the moment. Religion is the cause for war and division amongst people's, it is a tool for population control, it's a crutch for those who fear the unknown and a safe place for people to hide by being just like their neighbor, , it's llike a fish that changes it's color to hide and not to be seen , but to blend in and be safe and to pretend all will be ok , leave it up to god while the world suffers and they justify their blind eyes to injustice, in gods name. religion is of man whereas spirituality is of god. or in christian language religion is the devils tool, they just dont believe it.

IMHO

It's not a cause of mental illness but it is a focus for the mentally ill. I suppose it is better for some of them to obsess on God and want to spend every minute with Him than to stalk fellow humans or sink into severe depression. I am mentally ill myself but religion is not a big part of my life.

Ummm no, Chemical imbalances are the chief cause or heredity etc. What is taught I do not believe so. From studies actually, it shows that many who have religion are happier for the most part. Not just Christianity mind you. But the hormones produced in your body. Well, so long as your not the over the top going to kill someone because God told me to type. On the other hand, I do believe those forced to believe etc. could have some of those imbalances triggered. But religion itself absolutely not.

I wouldn't describe it as a "mental illness" ... but fanatical religious beliefs does have an irrational and disturbing effect.
