You can find glycerin at any drugstore or grocery store in the beauty aids area. It is a humectant ( attracts moisture ) and is an edible compound found in a lot of cough syrups for its thick, throat coating ability. Lemon juice, Glycerin and honey and a shot of good whiskey makes one of the best home remedy cough syrups of all time.

Glycerol, is a clear, ordorless, sweet tasting liquid in the alcohol class that is obtained by saponification* of certain fats and oils. It is used in many forms of manufacture of chellophane and alykyd resins and as a solvent and plasticizer. It is used in various soaps, candles and medications as well. When offered in solution, it is usually called glycerin.
Glycerol is most often obtained as a by product in soap production, but it is also made by other methods. It has two very unique properties: 1.) It will not disolve or be affected by most perol based solvents to include gasoline. 2.) It is inert and virtually harmless and readily mixes with water in any proportion.
Because of its harmless properties, glycerol is often used as a lubricant in food processing machinery. It's resistance to petro-chemicals make it ideal as a lubricant in gasonline and other volatile petro-chemical pumps.
It is slow to evaporate or crystalize and is used by some as a supplicant in leather and skin processing. The purest form of Glycerol in a nitrated form is commonly known as Dynamite.
It is available from chemical companies, Retail Druggists and from Hobby suppliers who carry soap making and candlemaking supplies.

Most drug stores/pharmacists should have it; you can also make it yourself at home by:
i. mixing ethanol or methanol with sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide
ii. add to oil (any vegetable oil)
the bottom layer that forms at the bottom is glycerin

Both are good for you, each fruit/vegetable has different vitamins. Therefore as more variety, as better. Vegetables have generally less sugar than fruits.

jcarl200 provided a pretty definitive answer. I would add though, that glycirin is used to make explosives, including nitroglycirin, the basic ingredient of dynamite.
