John (4 book in new test.) is a good place to start. It is one of the more simpler chapters.

The Bible book of Ruth is one of mt favorites. This Bible book takes its name from one of its principal characters, Ruth the Moabitess. The narrative shows how Ruth became an ancestress of David by undergoing brother-in-law marriage with Boaz in behalf of her mother-in-law Naomi. The appreciation, loyalty, and the trust in Jehovah that were manifested by Boaz, Naomi, and Ruth permeate the account

Edit: Why would the word of God scare you?
Not understanding it might put you off, but not scare you.
Philip asked the Eunoch reading the Torah if he understood what he read...the Eunoch answered no, unless he had somebody to teach him.

Scare you? *smile*....well...don't start with Revelation, that has some serious warnings in it..and also graphically describes the tribulation period.
Any of the gospels...they are all about Jesus. Romans, a beautiful book, also about Jesus. Psalms, full of comfort and wisdom.

Joshua... or Exodus... TONS of bloodhsed, like a good war novel.
"But Jael wife of Heber took a tent peg, and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly to him and drove the peg into his temple, until it went down into the ground—he was lying fast asleep from weariness—and he died."
Don't you just want to turn the page to see what happens!?!
