My suggestion is to buy a handbook on writing. It will help you structure your writing style to conform with standard writing practices. Ask your professor what writing style is preferred and stick to it. Some professors will grade your paper down for not using correct form in siting sources or quoting parts of the song.

OK quick formula for writing an essay:
Tell them what you are going to say in the opening paragraph and how you are going to prove it

Tell them- prove it and support it

Tell them what you said and conclude it

I know it sounds simple and stupid but you would be surprised by how many people get this part wrong.

Good luck!

Do some research for other essays critiquing a song - preferably ones that received high marks. Make sure they are from the same level of study and a similar course.

Look at the structure and format and use them as a pattern for your essay. If they are different then at least you have some idea of what is acceptable and you can write your own in the format that you are most comfortable with.

You can quote it at the beginning of the essay, it also depends on your personal writing style.
For example, if you choose Floyd's brick in the wall, you could write:

"We don't need no education
We dont need no thought control.....
All in all you're just another brick in the wall..."

- Pink Floyd, album "Another Brick In The Wall", 1979.
