Thai buddhist monks take 223 precepts; one of the first 8 is to abstain from sexual conduct. There are no exceptions . It is possible to disrobe for a while & then return, although this is rare.

Boys & men become monks @ many ages & for more than one motivation. They easily could have been infected before being ordained, especially given the long incubation rate the AIDS virus can have.

Many children (both boys & girls) from the poorest families are sold as sex slaves or are sent to work in the sex trade servicing foreign tourists. Might some boys escape & become monks instead ? It's a guaranteed meal, education & job for as long as they want it.

Thai Buddhist Monks are not supposed to have sex. Unfortunately there are bad monks who sometimes are caught having sex with nuns, other women and etc. Once they are caught they can no longer be monks.
In addition, there are other ways of getting AIDS, such as blood transfusion, IV drug use, born from HIV positive mother and drinking breast milk from infected woman.
I don't think men are required to have HIV test before becoming a monk. So the idea that a monk may have been HIV positive and caught HIV before becoming a monk is probably not uncommon.
Hope this helps.

The Monks are not born a Monk, so maybe before entering the Monkhood they could have had some sexual encounters. They may have inherited the virus from a parent and it laid dormant for awhile.....There are also cases of AIDS in some people that cannot be linked to any cause of infection. Using someones toothbrush and tattooing can also cause a case of HIV.
