what do you suggest, name the diagnostic equipment

all 850's up to and including 1996 have a double diagnostic plug at right front of engine compartment in front of computer case one has a button and a red led and a short pig tail connector you put pig tail into socket #2 and push button for 3 seconds then count 3 didgit blink code from led. socket #2 is fuel injection, #6 is ignition the others work for airbag[s] climate control ,transmission, etc. [there is a o.b.d.2 diagnostic connecter in the car either under center console armrest or under coin holder in fnt of shifter, but the socket system is better. get a shop manual preferably one from volvo as there info on this is most complete as to all functions, proceedures [fault tracing trees] [and clearing proceedures . good luck and use a high impeedance digital multi-meter for testing.too bad the later cars discontinued this device.

depends how much you want to spend you can get a little code reader for about $30 or you can get a diagnostic tool for about $3000

you want to buy directly from volvo.get on their sweden link.here in america they sell junk.never buy am.for a volvo that old.my wife is from sweden her brothers are tech there and every car we own is volvo and no one touches them but me.nevere trust anyone under the hood of your volvo
