What we think about most of the time is what's most important important to us. We are afraid to talk about it openly. We may be afraid to express ourselves poorly, or maybe we don't want to reveal our deepest thought too much because we don't trust that we will be understood and accepted. Whatever the reasons may be, it is difficult to talk about most important things because no words seem to be precise enough to express it.

We think about things that we don't really want to share, nor do people ask about your inner thoughts much. So there is alot of small talk that never reveals what's really on your mind. Isn't it strange that we do that? Some things we want to say, but for some reason we don't. Everybody does that.

Given the time and the era the author lived, I would say he was referring to his most important concerns, such as his family whom he loved, or his job which was at that time experimental. If he blabbered about those, he might be perceived as too chatty and unreliable, even unmanly. So no matter if his thoughts were all about them, his lips were sealed.
I think that he echoed the thoughts of many men and women who served in his generation.

There are certain things we spend hours thinking of. They may be embarrasing ideas or they may be too personal to share but they mean a lot to us. We don't just share them with others because we may be thought ridiculous or...or for a variety of other reasons. We all hide things from others...and they may matter a lot to us

I guess it means we're afraid to say what's on our mind. A lot of the things we think about are really deep or touchy subjects, and it's either uncomfortable or embarrising to talk about them. It's just how people are...

some of the things we think about the most never come up in a conversation, therefore we don't say them. sometimes we don't want to say them, and sometimes we forget to say them. either way, if it doesn't come up, then we can't always remember to say the things we think about no matter how long or often we think about them.
