You need to specify not only the motor but the gear train to which it is connected. The first thing to figure out is the power requirement; multiply the load by the speed at which the load is to be lifted. Multiply this by a suitable factor to allow for friction losses in the system. Then you can design the spool size for the rope, and figure the gear reduction necessary to drive it at the appropriate speed.

You will need a one horsepower motor to lift 550 lbs one foot per second. Depending on your cable a small spool may be all that is required to do this at the standard motor RPM of 1800. You will also need about 1000 Watts (counting inefficiency) to power it (almost as much as it takes to start your car). If you can afford to sacrifice speed to one foot per 10 seconds you can get by with a 1/10 hp motor which is about the size of a soup can. Smaller high output short duration motors are available but only Batman can afford them.

Try a winch. They are small and powerful. There are also gear boxes available for less powerful motors. Check safety specs. Just because a motor is powerful enough doesn't make it safe. You need to be concerned with braking and locking as well as power. Check gear for climbers. That should have safety incorporated into the device.
