There are two sides to the story--on one hand, your natural hair oils are healthy for your hair, they coat it and protect it from damage, but on the other, cleaning your hair regularly keeps the oxidants/grunge from building up on it, and maintains a clean scalp and shiny hair.
I've had a stylist tell me that all this washing we typically do on our hair is unneccessary, that she has her best hair days on the third day after a wash, and another stylist tell me that washing your hair every day won't hurt it as long as you use quality products.
I personally agree with the latter, and think it all depends on the quality of the shampoo/conditioner you're using. Cheap brands like Suave and White Rain use highly potent acids to clean the hair, and really dry it out. Other drugstore products like Pantene have plastic in them that coats the hair, getting the hair to lay down, but causing mega build-up that doesn't get cleaned off every time you wash your hair, which can ultimately be drying and damaging to the hair.
So try to pick good stuff if you wash your hair a lot. Aveda, Abba, Kenra, and Redken are some of my favorites, but there are others that try to strike the right pH balance with their cleansers (not too harsh or soft) and for the most part, try to use natural ingredients.

There definitely is such a thing as overwashing your hair. If you feel your hair is getting greasy or limp at the end of the day when you've washed it and you feel you need to wash it everyday, then use a mild shampoo that's meant for everyday use. A cleansing shampoo would work well.

You actually can overwash your hair. If you wash it too much it increases the oil production and makes your hair oily and really shiny. You should wash it everyday or every other day. But washing it more than once a day without a good reason-like something in your hair, isn't good. It increases oil production, just like your face.

ABSOLUTELY! It strips away the oils in your hair (which you DO need. Same as in your skin) and makes more prone to damage and drying. And in fact if you have oily hair and wash it too often it will become even more oily as it goes into overdrive to make up for the lost oil. It's best to wash your hair no more than every second day. If you have oily hair then get a shampoo made for that type. Nobody needs to wash their hair every day unless they engage in some sort of activity that makes them dirty (like working on a farm or playing sports).

Heavens YES!!! Overwashing can be so bad becasue you wash away the important oils that protect your scalp and hair.
Not only that, but have you ever noticed that your hair actually looks better the day AFTER you wash it...more managable, nice sheen. They have products on the market that can give you that "next day look". If you MUST wash every day, use a very mild shampoo. I go in spurts....every day, then every other day.
Be kind to your hair.....hair needs love too!

You know it all depends on you and your hair. Are you black, white, mexican, indian? the reason i ask is because everyones hair is different. some white people wash their hair everyday and that cool because some have oily hair but some black people can't because it can dry our hair out. Our hair is more course and need that oil that our hair produce.but the best thing to do is ask you doctor or dymo and they should let you know. good luck

YES, IT IS BEST TO WASH YOUR HAIR EITHER ONCE A WEEK OR EVERY TWO WEEKS. WHEN WASHING YOUR HAIR TOO MUCH, YOU ARE NOT GIVING YOUR HAIR ENOUGH TIME TO ABSORB ANY OF THE NUTRIENTS THAT IT RECEIVES FROM IT'S PREVIOUS WASH. AND MAKE SURE TO ALWAYS DEEP CONDITION, IT KEEPS YOUR HAIR STRONGER, IT GIVES THE PORES OF THE SCALP TIME TO ABSORB THE CONDITIONER WHICH IS VERY GOOD FOR YOUR HAIR.
HOPE THIS HELPED.
GOOD LUCK
