I took a new job where I will have to "hot nob" at high end functions, and "work the room". Any suggestions on how to do this??!!

Chat with people, talk about things related to the industry maybe?

This is a "no-brainer" for me. Whenever you meet someone continually direct the conversation back to them. Get them to talk about themselves. (and pretend to be interested even if you aren't)

Also come to the event armed with about three arcane facts about weird **** that you can use to "escape" from conversations that are truly going down the dumper. Introduce topics like Chinese pottery hallmarks or even something as tasteless as Klan traditions. They'll move on to the next victim and you'll be free to hob nob with a more attractive target.

Also, figure out some sort of way to remember people's names. I use mnemonic devices like making their names rhyme with some aspect of their appearance. BTW You are not expected to remember the names of any of their relatives or tennis partners.

Don't wear a blazer or an ascot. Remember, if you are the "new guy" everybody will be interested in impressing YOU. Don't tell ANYBODY EVERYTHING about yourself. Save the details for the ones that YOU find interesting. There is truth to the suggestion that one should remain a "man of mystery." They'll be wondering about you at the water cooler for at least a week. Oh, you can drop "hints" about your trip to Aspen, your pen pal relationship with Fidel Castro or your brush with the Dali Lama at Fredrick's of Hollywood. But, please, no details.

Put on that pretty smile and make buddies at the event. Keep going until you have spoken to everyone. Stay close to the entrance so you can hear names being announced by the host. Have a list of 10 conversation starters ready. Keep smiling! Stay for the entire time of the event. Piece of cake--you can do it!

Find out what people's specific interests are so you have something more to say than just generic small talk about work or the weather etc..
