Religion is a kind of a ladder that you use to climb to higher levels of conciousness. A boat that you use to cross the river. It is not an end in itself, most people make a mistake here. Once you have crossed the river you do not keep on dragging the boat behind you! You leave it behind. You needed the boat to cross the river now you have no need of it so leave it on the shore and go on ahead.
Religion is to be transcended. Most of the worlds religions originally taught that, later they were organised and rituals added. Then theologies were developed and so forth.
Spirituality was thus lost. Religion is meant to make a person spiritual to raise ones conciousness to attain wisdom in order to attain real happiness.
There is also a bit of a paradox here that once you transcend religion you become really religious!! Ok, I'll say spiritual so as not to confuse you. Then your daily life will be a religion. Most people talk loads of religion everyday but live not an ounce of it but for the truly spiritual person his or her whole life is a religion lived out.
All religions are ways to the same end. They are like different fingers pointing towards the moon look at the moon not the finger. Thank you.

This is a tricky and dangerous question. You cannot rescue isolated positive aspects of things that are evil on the whole. It's like trying to stick to the fact that Hitler loved dogs. I think you have to see the whole picture. And the whole picture is that religions are very negative institutions for humanity, EVEN though there might be something good to them.

giving the inventor and his/her priesthood POWER over both the people and even the kings.
Look how much money the Roman Catholic church has ammassed, to say nothing of the morons (sorry mormons).
Remember that historically, monarchs were deposed on the word of the pope. ethnic minorities were exterminated, right down to anybody the religious authorities didn't like. Much like the Taliban and, in fact, even mohommedanism today

God would not have allowed it if it did not serve His purpose. A lot of very good people have been saved through a religious order or following and maybe you are one of them.
Don't discount religion completely. If it was not here we would have total chaos.><>

From the Church's view: For manipulating the masses. Church is a political institutin of power.
From the followers' point of view: Something to hold on to, and follow as a compensation for inability to think for themselves, and stand on their own feet.
For nothing else.

Religion is good for giving the world a clean out! It's sort of like doing a spring clean?
Recently we've been having a spring clean in the Lebenon for example! Caused by Religion!

Before religion we could kill or whatever without any sense of remorse or possible judgment, religion brought about laws.
