Down syndrome is a combination of physical abnormalities and mental retardation characterized by a genetic defect in chromosome pair 21.

The genetic defect associated with Down syndrome is the presence of extra material on the chromosome pair designated 21. Although other genetic disorders may be associated with an extra chromosome, only Down syndrome is characterized by extra chromosome 21 material.

Autism
There is a great diversity in the skills and behaviors of individuals diagnosed as autistic, and physicians will often arrive at different conclusions about the appropriate diagnosis. Much of this is due to the sensory system of autistics, which is quite different from the sensory system of other people, since certain stimulations can affect an autistic differently than a non-autistic, and the degree to which the sensory system is affected varies wildly from one autistic person to another.

Nevertheless, professionals within pediatrics, child psychology, behavior analysis, and child development often look for early indicators of autism in order to initiate treatment as early as possible for the greatest benefit. However, some people do not believe in treatment for autism, either because they do not believe autism is a disorder or because they believe treatment can do more harm than good.

The majority of autistics have slightly enlarged brain size, compared to normal people. Neurology Today (Volume 2,8: August 2002) stated that "Although it is accepted that autistic individuals have, on average, an enlarged brain size, the nature of this abnormality remains unknown.". Down Syndrome is caused by the egg not splitting correctly. Instead of the chromosomes splitting evenly, they split unevenly. So, it's a gene problem, an extra chromosome, but it is caused by the chromosomes not splitting evenly, which happens by chance every so often. I have only briefly seen people with Down Syndrome. They seemed nice, quite, and mentally retarded or slow. I have heard that some have autism, ADHD, or even schizophrenia, though. So, they could just have Down Syndrome or also another diagnoses in addition. Those with just Down Syndrome seem open to people and will befriend others readily. Autism is when the child has problems properly socializing, speaking and has odd behaviors, either limited interests or liking to do repetitive things or both. It is caused by immune dysfunction. Thousands have been recovered to appear indistinguishable from their peers, my children included. But most seem to need to stay on immune-boosting supplements forever to avoid relapse. Since those with autism have obsessive behaviors, and some have ADHD, and some are aggressive, and some talk normal (after speech therapy or medical treatments) and some don't talk at all, there is a huge variance in symptoms. So, if someone tells you that someone has autism, just expect that they may or may not speak, and you will likely struggle relating to them. So, it will take practice. Some may seem normal, but just get frustrated here and there socially, some may ignore everyone, not socializing at all, and there is a lot of variances in between. You will just have to ask about them and meet them to know what their unique symptoms are.

Down syndrome (DS) is a condition in which extra genetic material causes delays in the way a child develops, and often leads to mental retardation. It affects 1 in every 800 babies born.

Autism is a complex developmental disorder that appears in the first 3 years of life, although it is sometimes diagnosed much later. It affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills.

like apples and oranges, down syndrome is caused by a missing chromosome, and is indicated by distinct features of it's victims.. nobody knows the cause of autism but there are no distinctive features of its victims. also down syndrome victims are vocal, can perform at various levels, while children with autism most generally are non-verbal and or non-responsive to every day functions. although there are variations of that also..
