Just inspect the candy that have the wrappers on them.
DON'T eat any candy that is open or like personally wrapped by the person who gave it to you. Just eat the sealed stuff but take notice of the condition of the wrapper before you open it.

You should never eat candy that is not wrapped, home made from someone you don't know, and if it doesn't look right don't eat it. Some hospitals will scan the candy for you, free of charge. Have a safe and scary Halloween.

The town I grew up in, Massena, ny, offers xraying the candy at the hospital free of charge during certain hours. Its great

Only eat candies that are commercially produced and wrapped with the wrapper being intact.

I know when i trick or treated you could take it to the hospital and get it x=rayed... no joke.. I don't know if they will do it now.. But no home made candies.. just the basic regular wrapped candy.

Buy it yourself. Dump the stuff from door-to-door and replace it with something you know is safe. Just make sure your kids get all of the sugary sweet, tooth-rotting stuff they want and don't try to be "super-parent" and replace it with something healthy.

Take your kid to the mall or some organized affair. Less likely to be weirdos behind doors there.

There aren't as many poisonings and such as the tree-hugging newscasters would have us believe but why take a chance with your child? I know I'm not.

Actually I think our children just like the idea of going Trick or Treating. We buy the candy from the kids. If they get rid of atleast half the bag, it is usually a huge bag, they get $5. If they only keep 1/3 of the candy they get $10. I would rather see them get rid of it then ruin their health or teeth. Amazingly our children usually give up more than half and only keep their very favorite. We inspect the candy very close. Usually things like M&M's should hold some air when you squeeze the bag gently. Other items you just need to inspect very close. Just some suggestions!

dont worry about it the whole "putting needles/drugs in candy" thing is an unwarranted fear from the 1980's and 1990's.
try websearching for actual instances in which someone found tainted candy recently and you will be assured.

I third China Girl's answer.

And I second andri..dlkalb61's answer about checking specifically for needle holes, in the wrapper as well as the candy.

But seriously, the best way to avoid poison is to trick or treat in a rich neighborhood, plus you get all the best expensive candy out there. If your parents don't want to buy the candy for you then get them to take you to a better 'hood.
