Wondered this one myself.. 20+ year commercial fisherman who has lost more buddies to drowning than I have toes and fingers put together.. 10 toes 10 fingers still here.. lol
I remember swimming in rivers and pools as a kid.. getting a breath of water sure was an insult to the 'ol lungs. Can't imagine 2 or 3 in a row..
The most painful?? Don't think so.. Being tortured to death.. by an enemy your fighting would be a lot worse..Drowning would be much faster.. and once you pass out your gone.. These torture dudes.. wake you up.. for more..

drowning takes about 5 minutes and you loose consciousness right?

well, what about crucifixion? that can take days your body weight pulling on you, crushing your lungs slow.

I think of it this way,
Satan had a hand in killing Jesus,
and no doubt he picked the most painful way ( since he has observed humans for so long, he probably knows)

i;ve nearly drowned once,
it was scary, not painful so much.
It hurt more when I was safe and recovering,
( I think my panic overwhelmed the pain)

I think it would be scary, but I can think of other ways that might be more painful. Being eaten alive by ants would be pretty painful, and take a long time. Burning would suck. Cancer pain that lingers for months would be horrible. I really hope I have the luxury of dying in my sleep.

Well I'm sure if we're answering this we are not positive this is true as we are not dead from drowning. But there are many similar ways to die that have the same affect as drowning. Lung diseases (asthma, emphysema etc...) Congestional Heart failure fill your lungs with fluid and these have the same affect as drowning. I only know this from watching people close to me pass to the otherside.

Being burned alive would not be my first choice. Being ground up feet first in a slow meat grinder would be pretty bad. Drowning would be bad, but burning, especially if you don't have enough smoke to suffocate on would be much worse, I think.

The guillotine would be my choice (if I had to choose.) It's quick and sure.

It's probably scary, but I could think of worse deaths. Burning is said to be the most painful. I would also think being disemboweled would be horrible.

Of course!!! I meant if you cant swim, and breathing in the water through your mouth and nose is pretty painful, being alive is being saved by an Angel.

For me, being drawn and quartered rates right up there on the potential pain scale.

now how could this be known. first somebody would need to drown to death and live to tell of it, then they would need to die from all the other options, to make a meaningful comparison, and they would need to remain sane enough after all of this dieing to be reliable.
