Humanity. I believe it is the way you feel and act towards others. What would you do to help another being? What do you feel about others? Each situation is different but the results should always be close to the same if your humanity is in tact.
If we all kept our humanity in mind this world would be a completely different place.

thats a big question...

for some, the answer (to the search for the answer) to that question will define how they view God.

for some people that question is usually the starting point on becoming either a deist or an atheist

most people who do not believe in God will eventually be led to define humanity as nothing more that being a (somewhat) civilized animal

but people who come to believe in God eventually comes to a realization there there is more to life than just existing.

as a deist, i would define a person's humanity as the knowledge of being a created being (by the Supreme Being) and the knowledge of one's place in the vastness of the universe (which was created by the ID) and the knoweldge of one's purpose for being where and when the Maker have placed him/her on.

Feeling empathy towards others human or not. Although the definition of humanity does not recognize empathy I believe it is a natural instinct that has been lost in a civilized world in which our humanity has been replaced by complacency in a fatalistic society. It is the degree in which they can feel someone Else's pain and suffering. It seems to me children especially young females are more empathetic especially towards animals. So, I think it is basically spiritual more than it is ritual.

1.The ability to make Choice and Transcend hormonal instincts - Animals cannot do that, they kill, breed and mark territory all by instinct.

2. The ability to be Benevolent and virtuous to others as well as the ability to be Malevolent and violent

3. The ability to Forgive - without forgiveness, No Love can be practiced, No Generousity can be done. With Vengence and Hatred in the Heart, a person just burns himself up and spreads that fire to others.

I think it all condenses into the ability to think ahead and feel within.

I think our humaity is defined by the value we place on other's humainty. All our talk of religion or philosophy is only talk, what defines who we are is what we do.

From what you've shared with everyone here, I'd say you've set a great example.

(No scriptures were harmed or used out of context in the making of this post)

Added:
I think we all grant you the right to be human, spooky. I was referring to what you've shared about the things you've faced in your life and how you've handled them. We're glad you're here.

Their humanity in the sense of how they feel and act towards humanity?? I think a person's actions speak for themselves. How do you treat each and every person you come across.. how willing are you to reach out to a stranger and make them happy in the smallest way... how far do you go to not pollute, not misuse out natural resources so that the rest of humanity may enjoy our earth for lifetimes to come.... are you working in body mind and spirit to make the world a better place or only thinking for yourself?

A person -any person, just got knocked to the ground hard on a busy city street and is obviously in pain. In that instant, a persons Humanity is tested.

Everything.

In the Heart of Darkness there is a scene where the 'savages' are yelling and screaming at the boat as it goes up stream.

Most people are 'appalled' by the savages, but (if I remember correctly) Marlow or the narrator reflects on how we are all these 'savages'.

*That* is the truth about humanity my friend; we are savages and gods.
