Of the estimated 6000 languages spoken in the world today, only around 200 have more than 1 million speakers, and only 23 have more than 50 million speakers.

On the scientifically based lists, there are between 3000 and 8000 languages. Most linguists use the number 6000 as a convenient compromise figure. If you take six people to represent 1000 languages each, one of them lives in the Americas, one of them lives in Eurasia, two of them live in Africa, one of them lives on Australia and the islands of Asia and the Pacific, and one of them lives on the island of New Guinea.

Depends on your definition of language (minimum number of people speaking it)
Could be as low as 12 and as high as 500 (and I am NOT counting dialects!)
