Not really. Anyone got a dog I can eat?

hehehehe... just kidding, I love dogs, not their meat.

The Chinese actually do care about the environment. That's why they had the 1 child policy, because they knew what an environmental disaster a population explosion would cause.

If they had been like India, there'd be 4 billion Chinese on the planet now, dating back to the implementation of the one-child policy.

But in everyday life, you wouldn't know that an average Chinese cares about environmental issues. Most Chinese are still in the "squirrel" mode, concerned with putting food (rice) on the table, and simple subsistence issues. They would notice less if the yangtze river was yellow, brown, orange or grey.

And the Chinese government, lets say its just beginning to try and clean up its act.

The situation doesn't look great, but neither did the forecasts of 30 years ago. We're just a little closer to the end reality now.

The environment health condition is drawing more and more concerns for the general public in China.

Unfortunately, many government and the local officials are not that educated about the importance of the environmental health.
But it is catching up. They are revising laws and regulations to control pollutions and contaminations.

Consider the following, China get out of the a huge politcal turmoils in the 80's. They are just starting to enjoy the political and educational stability. It will takes some time to get educate them. But it is getting there. Especially for people in Bejing, shanghai and other large cities where they are suffering from pollutions and the effects of bad environmental health.
Things are changing.

The Chinese have a bad enviromental record but there are forces working within China to change that. Here is part of an article from the website I have listed.

NGO stands for non governmental organizations
***********************************

Over the past decade, since the establishment of China’s first environmental NGO, Friends of Nature, there has been a transformation in the nature of environmental activism in China. Initially concerned primarily with the relatively politically “safe” issues of environmental education and biodiversity protection, environmental NGOs in China today are engaged in dam protests, filing lawsuits against polluting factories, and pursuing multinationals engaged in illegal activities. Most environmental NGOs in China exist as part of a much wider community of environmental activism involving China’s scientific community, the media, multinationals, international non-governmental organizations, and elements of the Chinese government.

The Chinese government has generally adopted a positive attitude toward environmental NGOs, recognizing that they fill a critical gap in the state’s capacity to protect the environment effectively. Still, Beijing continues to exercise control over NGOs through a range of regulations and restrictions, remaining wary of the potential of environmental activism in China to transform into a force for much broader political change.
