I was diagnosed today by my doctor with panic disorder today and was prescribed remeron for depression, klonopin for anxiety, and trazadone for insomnia. I have been suffering for a long while now and really need some kind of reilef, but I'm afraid to try another antidepressant seeing that none have worked for me in the past. However, I just read online that ssri (i think they're called) antidepressants such as prozac, effexor xr, and zoloft are quite different from remeron so I'm willing to try to get better once more. I would appreciate any advice on this. Thanks.

I have been taking Remeron for 4 of the last 6 years. I was taking Effexor XR for 2 years in the middle of that time period. In the past, I have also tried Celexa, Serzone, and Wellbutrin. For me, Remeron has worked the best and I have not had any side effects except for some weight gain. Effexor worked well for awhile but then stopped working. I had horrible withdrawal symptoms from Effexor and would not wish it on my worst enemy. Wellbutrin is very popular and, for many people who don't get relief from other medications, it's very effective. There are also some newer medications, such as Cymbalta and Lexepro. SSRI's (Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil) can be very effective, but often have more side effects. I recommend discussing with your doctor the fact you do not feel your current medication is working for you. Do your own research regarding the various anti-depressants prior to your appointment so that you can have a more productive discussion with your doctor. Good luck- I can understand how you are feeling.

I took Remeron for about three months and gained 25 lbs. That was enough to make me ask the doc for something else. Yes. There definitely better drugs but a doc will commonly prescribe Remeron or Elavil when the others haven't worked for you. I'm not sure why Remeron was the first thing prescribed with so many good drugs available. Also, Klonipin and trazadone can also cause weight gain. My son takes Lexapro to help with anxiety. He also takes Trazadone to help him sleep but he gets very hungry after he takes it.

Remeron also works on psychotic episodes or at least it is supposed to but I have had no luck with it at all. It kept me awake half of the night even though I also take a sleeping medication before I go to bed. Remeron may work great on you. Just because it didn't work for me it may still work for you. If you have a lot of side effects from it you can always ask the doctor for Cogentin as it will help take the side effects away. Good Luck and God Bless.
