Try Kubuntu for a full featured very custimizable and powerful OS

Ubuntu is one of the most popular, and very simple

Xubuntu is perfect with older, slower computers.

all in all, it depends what you use it for. Here, I have 4 computers, and all have different distributions of linux for different reasons:

Laptop: runs ubuntu because it's very good in terms of battery life as compared to other linux distributions I've used. Ubuntu's also easy to use with wifi and multimedia which is essentially what I use the laptop for. ubuntu is also quick in terms of getting updated sources onto the apt repositories, keeping the laptop up to date.

Server: (mail, http, dns) - pure debian. Very stable and secure, and boasts the best package manager on earth (with supercow powers).

Backup Server: (nfsd) - pure debian. again very stable, and used on this server because of debian's small footprint (core).

Desktop: SuSE - mainly used because of its great use of kde, which isn't a million miles away from Windoze. Used on this computer since the rest of the family need something which is easy to use and something which is very intuitive.

Other distros I've tried are Fedora (all seems a bit all over the place), mandrake (plain horrid), Red Hat (ages ago! probably better nowadays than it was back then...) and a few others here and there.

Favorite? gotta be pure debian!

Actually it is. In fact the Windows XP was "inspired" by Linux!?

Funny, isn't it? Windows would've sued the pants off anyone who tried to pirate them, while they happily used the "inspiration" of the open source technology!?!

Take your choice from the free downloads available at http://distrowatch.com/ where you've got a range from a simple no frills 1 CD Kit to a full Power Packed version DVD version! In iso images that you can burn onto a CD or DVD!

Since you're new to Linux, I'd suggest that you study the subject first by reading the reviews and familiarizing yourself with it.

All the best!

Cheers

of direction Linux is extra useful than abode windows yet remember Microsoft replace into the 1st with the objective to speak and human beings like myself have been reported in the era thinking it replace into the final element considering that sliced bread. We have been ALL fooled. What approximately Vista and the WOW element that by no potential labored. haha. Your ultimate suited, abode windows isn't the final and by no potential would be. Linux hasn't have been given the matters that Microsoft has have been given. What approximately each and all of the internet explorer browsers that by no potential artwork precise. the only reason abode windows remains getting used with the aid of maximum human beings is the actuality that abode windows has extra applications than the different, or maybe a number of those do no longer artwork the final. i could bypass on and on approximately Microsoft and bill Gates yet i'm going to enable it bypass at that. BTW, I honestly have used Linux and that i'm thinking of going back to it for sturdy. Eric.

I hear a lot of talk about Ubuntu. Personally, I've used Fedora Core, and I liked that. Now, I use Mac OS X. If you're tired of Windows, there's many alternatives. Linux is secure, just as Mac, but Mac is easier to use.

try unbuntu, it's based off debian and is pretty easy for new users. Check out Knoppix too. You can boot and run your computer off the CD and not have to use the hard drive.
