As a former nurse who saw a lot of battered women, I always assumed that a woman with a black eye, bruises, or broken bones had been battered. A lot of the time, I was right.
But getting them to seek help was usually impossible.

It depends on whether you look ashamed of the eye or are trying to hide it/tilt your face.... then I suspect domestic abuse.
If its just kind of part of your apprearance and you have a normal, healthy attitude or are still chipper, smiling- then I dont worry so much.
Women who have been hit will (usually) look down, not smile, not speak much; or will try to have their hair in their face.... but if it was an accident they have nothing to be so worried about-- you know, its okay if someone finds out because she is not trying to protect her husbands reputation and ths having to hide the facts ... at her own expense......

My only thought would be, "wow...bet that hurt. Glad it isn't me....." Most, however would wonder what happened, and then from their own past experiences, would let it go or make up their own scenario. But, unless they know you, they will never ask. If they find out something "bad", then they won't know what to do to make it better. If it is something embarrassing, then they get embarrassed for asking. Some things are best left unknown, as I was once told.....

we don't ask because we don't want to be a part of it, we just look at your eye because it's an unusual thing, and first tought i would have was that somebody hit you
walk around with sunglasses to disguise yourself until it disappears
of course if you have a black eye that is blood spill, nobody will think you got beaten up. we'll just look at your eye as one unusual thing

Most people would assume that you were savagely beaten by your drunken, abusive husband
