An alcoholic liquor distilled from wine or fermented fruit juice
http://www.answers.com/topic/brandy

brandy
A liquor distilled from wine or other fermented (see fermentation) fruit juice. The name "brandy" comes from the Dutch brandewijn ("burned (distilled) wine"), referring to the technique of heating the wine during distillation. A number of sub-categories fall under the broad definition of brandy including fruit brandy, grappa, marc, pomace and eau-de-vie (eau-de-vie de vin is French for brandy). Brandies made from apples and grapes are generally aged in wood, which contributes flavor and color. Those made from other fruits are less likely to be aged in this fashion and are typically colorless. The finest brandies traditionally come from cognac followed by those from armagnac-both in southwestern France. See also aguardente; applejack; apricot brandy; aqua vitea; cachaca; calvados; kirsch; metaxa; pisco; raki; slivovitz.

brandy
Alcoholic beverage distilled from wine or a fermented fruit mash. The name comes from the Dutch brandewijn, “distilled wine.” Most brandies are aged and contain about 50% alcohol by volume. Some are darkened with caramel. They are usually served alone as after-dinner drinks but are sometimes used in mixed drinks or dessert dishes or as fuel in flamed dishes such as crêpes suzettes and cherries jubilee. They are also used as the base of various liqueurs. The finest brandy is usually thought to be French cognac.

Brandy is normally a distilled wine. It can be left clear and not aged or put in casks to age and gain an amber color.

Pomace brandy, (also called Marc or Grappa) is created when the pulp and seeds left over from wine production are fermented again and then distilled.

Both normal grape brandy and more often pomace brandy are used as the base for other spirits such as Ouzo or Arak (both mix herbs, especially anise, in with the brandy and redistill it).

It can be made out of other fruits in a similar way, by fermenting the fruit and then distilling it. Normally the fruit used is listed such as "peach brandy" or "apricot brandy."

Brandy is distilled wine. Distilling wine evaporates out a large portion of the water, leaving a much higher percentage of alcohol and the other stuff in wine besides water. Like every other distilled alcohol (except moonshine), brandy is then aged to mellow it out and add character and improve flavors.

By the way, cognac is the same thing as brandy, except that cognac is brandy made in a specific region in France.

Wine is a fermented drink usually made with fruit. Its top alcohol level is under 20%. If you distill wine to concentrate the alcohol, you get brandy that is typically 40% or a bit more alcohol. One usually thinks of brandy and wine made from grapes, but I've drunk brandies made from apples, peaches, pears, etc. My Japanese gal prepares warm sake for me. It's a wine made from rice.

Wine is a drink of fermented grapes, usually 7 to 12% alcohol by volume. For some inexpensive wines, alcohol is added to bring the percentage up to 20% -- those are called "fortified" wines.

Just as corn mash can be fermented and then distilled into whiskey, potatos can be fermented and then distilled into vodka annd win can be fermented and then distilled into BRANDY, which is 40% or more alchohol (all of it coming from the fermented grapes) and then aged.
