I would have to say the main difference is that a table fan blows air in the direction in which it's pointed, whereas a ceiling fan can move the air within the entire room, either downwards or, if in reverse mode, drawing it upwards.

ceiling fan moves air in a downward motion, and can be used to pull air up by reversing it. this is instrumental in using it to aid in central and heating a home or office. hot air rises and cool air falls. In the winter the fan will cause the warm air near the ceiling to be pushed downward giving more heat ito the occupants rather than leaving it trapped near the ceiling. during the summer you and do just the opposite .
A table fan is designed to sit on a table or other stand and blow a breeze acros the area it is covering. It only blows in one directionand unless it is an osculating fan it (sweep the blades from side to side) it only blows in the direction it is turned, or facing.
functional ceiling fans are designed to aid in cooling /heating while table fanse are designed to blow a breeze across a specific area.

Your kidding right. I think it might be that the ceiling fan is attached to the ceiling and a table fan is one that is free standing and you move around to where you want it. This is just a guess though.

A table fan can be moved to different locations and angles. A ceiling fan is fixed in one location only and will cool only the same spot.
