Your conscience, on its own, is on a sliding scale. It reacts to events around you based on your rational mind's view of normalcy. Therefore, if you grow up in an environment where certain crimes are prevalent, your conscience will have less effect in such areas.

If you are a Christian, you have a little help in this area. A TRUE Christian's conscience is guided by the Holy Spirit. Basically, the Spirit of God stays by your side and serves as your conscience. And HIS view of normalcy is absolute and perfect. Therefore, the conscience of a TRUE christian is wholly and absolutely reliable.

The consciense acts on what it beleives to be true. Truth does not originate with the conscience. We are taught right from wrong as children so it is usually then we develop our consciense

We know that stealing is wrong so most of us have a conscience that will guide us and keep us from stealing. However some children are taught that stealing is okay, just don't get caught. Getting caught is what is wrong, not stealing. So these children grow up stealing and their conscience does not bother them because it has been taught stealing is okay.

Unfortunatly I know this because I have lived for years and years around people who teach their kids this.

As reliable as the upbringing and society you were brought up in. The cause of the conscience is the culmination of impressions of what is right or wrong based on your upbringing.

Extreme religious scenes have an extreme conscience dictatorship. etc etc.

Look at your upbringing, and your conscience.
Does it sound like your mum or dad speaking?

Be your own decision maker, not a puppet to social influence based on its experience, not yours.

This is nothing more than someone's feelings. I am always amazed by Christians who insist they know something because they "have a witness in their heart" or some such indefinable twaddle, when their own scripture says:

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" Jeremiah 17:9

and

"Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts." Proverbs 21:2

and also

"The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise." Proverbs 12:15

I think those who believe their conscience never leads them astray are deceiving themselves. And however right you may believe you are, it's sometimes a good idea to seek advice from trustworthy outsiders, whose words, unlike your feelings and even scripture, you cannot interpret to suit your purpose of the moment.
