the question is only a matter of security.
you have no right to tell someone else what they can wear, as long as its within decency, and not endangering anyone.
but you obviously can't have a picture ID for example that does not have a picture thats sepecifically identifiable to that person.
in public spaces, public safety takes priority over private issues.
this is really a very simple thing, I'm not sure why people act like its so hard. you do not have a right to be able to see someone else's face. you *DO* have a right to have a reasonable degree of security, just have to have a balance between which is which, and the circumstances.
do people get weirded out by people in winter, wearing poofy coats? why not? they could hide explosives or other weapons, completely un-detectable to a passing visual observance.

The wearing of the burka is part of a dress code associated with a religion. Religious laws are SACROSANCT and NO non-religious body can have any say in ANYTHING of a religious nature. Freedom of religion means just that. It means that NO law can be made to interfere with ANY religious practice. It ALSO means that no law can be INTERPRETED to interfere with any religious practice no matter WHAT it is. If we start doing that then what is next? Prohibiting Jews from wearing the Yarmulke, determining what type of cross or crucifix christians can wear, telling pagans that they can't wear the 5-pointed star, Thor's hammer or other symbol. Where will it end?

Wearing aburka would totally not be illegal because it has to do with someones religious beliefs, as long as the burka does not cause some crime to occur it is legal. A bank robber is totally different as the person is covering the face to do something wrong.

That will never fly. However, I do feel as if the Muslims are just opening themselves up to more scrutiny by failing to comply with the West. When in Rome, do as the Romans right? No, but not with Islam. It's handled with kid gloves nowadays because noone wants to offend them lest we risk angry marauders, Jihad, and mayhem in the name of Allah, for they feel they have been persecuted unjustly.
Come on. If we had a rash of murders break out in the name of Jesus by rabid Christians, Christians would be under the microscope too. Muslims in the west put themselves in the glass house by their unrelenting fervor, and failure to comply with the rules of the nation in which they choose to live. The Patriot Act's muscle will be flexed more and more, and as it does, I do see the hijab catching hell in the US in a few years.

Covering body is religous, this is also freedom of expression. If Muslim women want to do this, they should have the freedom, things like guns can be scanned in the entrances, places like Detroit airport have Muslim women to search Muslim women, other places have women to search women, this is not a threat, peace

should wearing thongs in public be illegal? should wearing bikinis be illegal?
It's amazing how people love to pick on other people without thinking that just like they have the freedom to were anything they like, these other people should as well...
Why is it SOOOOO BAD for us nowadays to see someone wearing a decent outfit??? But when we see a hardly-clad-whore, it's all OK...

There is no 'right' to anonymity in public places. Therefore, if a society thinks it is unsafe to have masked people going around concealing their identities, it is perfectly reasonable to forbid their doing so.
If the religious cannot handle the fact that a society requires openness about one's identity, they should not move to that society.
