I am trying to learn Russian, and I am curious as to whether or not the time of day I study affects my ability to learn. Example: would it be better in the morning or night? When I am tired or not? Etc.

The truth is that it depends on each individual. I like for my kids to do their homework as soon as they come home from school. For 3 of the kids this works fine. For the 4th, he always takes forever. If I let him wait until later in the evening he finishes in no time at all. Evening is better for him.
For most people it is better when you are not tired. Your brain is able to focus more. While I have heard the theory that sleeping right after studying is helpful, it is not true for all people. What may true is that if you think about some of the things that you have learned while you are falling asleep then you will perhaps process it as you sleep. You could study it at any time though and still do that.

One tip that I have is to make associations with things that you already know. If you learn that chaqueta means jacket (Spanish example) then you can see that the spelling and sound is similar. By associating it with the English word it can help you to recall it. Another example is "aburrido." It means boring, but sounds like a burrito. I tell my students to think of a boring burrito. They tend to remember it better.

Good luck with your studies!

I like to study with intervals, it is the very best way.
Like i learned or read something, i repeat next day and then in 2 days again i repeat. Wow this knowledge is unforgettable. As for words, i need sometimes to repeat learning 4-5 times. You have to use the words too all the time, otherwise, you forget them.
If you read a text first time you remember just 35 percent of it. That's why you have to repeat reading it, if you want to keep the knowledge.
I like it too when i learn in the evening and repeat after i wake up.

The evening is the best. It's a known scientific fact that sleeping right after studying will help you remember it better. Even animals get a benefit from sleeping after learning something.

before going to bed.

here's my WAY during ORDINARY CLASSES:

1. READ and UNDERSTAND every lesson in advance or after discussion. - When I read and understand it, I tend to memorize everything I read even I dont intentionally memorize it! And I have that very good advantage when it comes to surprise quizzes or last-minute studies!

2. Study before sleeping then take a COLD shower.- This technique is for everybody! I watched it in National Geographic Channel and found out that when sleeping, our brain recalls everything happened esp our must-to-memorize thingies. Stress from the COLD shower can also help everybody memorize or improve their memory! "Anyway, it's really better for me to study before sleeping"; my parents insist on studying in the morning--4-5am--because they said our brain is fresh from sleep and very good in absorbing what you've read.! But actually, I'm so sleepy when I study in the morning, even I get 7-10 hours of sleep!--And as a result, nothing's working in my brain!

3. PREPARE everything needed for the following day.- I always have a good sleep if I don't worry for tomorrow. So I need to prepare everything I need before going to bed!

You have got to scale down the hours earlier than you could have an expertise overload!! Remember it is greater to research much less and recollect extra, than research extra and recollect much less. Quality now not Quantity. Maybe on Saturday do 4 forty five minute periods with a fifteen minute holiday in among. NOT eight HRS!! You will recollect plenty extra.
