The Hebrew word that was translated as slave actually means paid worker. Sort of like a contractor. I think the Hebrews were more the military of Egypt because they were living in a strategic position in Egypt. Why would the pharoahs treat them poorly if the Hebrews could let foriegn invaders attack Egypt?

They were slaves under egyptian rule.
God intended them to become enslaved to Egypt and set it up so that they would be.
You need to read the story of Jacob and then Joseph to understand that God intended this to happen a long time before it did, and he set it to be that Joseph would be the first enslaved there and many other things to happen so that the Israelites would be in the area available to enslave. (the famine)
It was to last for 400 years and it did.

Yes. They were there originally as guest. But they became so numerous that the leaders put them to work, they eventually became slaves and were treated harshly.

the egyptians have no record of the hebrews being there, so, most likely, thats simply a "story"
we have similar stories .. like george washington chopping down a cherry tree, and lincoln walking 20 miles to return a nickel

YES, that is why Moses said " Let my people go", he wanted them set free because they were not.( DUH) It only took about a few hundred years, murder, ten plagues and forty years in the hot desert to get a little taste of it, only for it to start all over again.
