Will the wine be bad? Why did this happen? This is homemade wine from a friend and I always make sure the white wine is on its side during storage to make sure the cork is moist! Help

Since you said the wine was stored on its side and not upright, it was just a cheap cork. The problem with the cork crumbling will not make the wine bad in itself. However, if the cork allowed too much air into the bottle after it was sealed, the wine could have oxidized. It may be alright but it may not be. The only way you will know for certain is to try a glass. I have a bottle of German Riesling from a reputable winery in my cellar that is sticky on top which means the wine could be bad but, as I've said, the only way to know is to open the wine and test it.

If the wine is good and you don't finish the bottle, make sure to seal it properly with a wine stopper so that the wine will stay good for a few days.

When your friend finish bottling the wine did he/she store in with the cork tilted more downward than the rest of the bottle, because if it is not stored like that then it can also cause this to happen. If that is not the case then it may be bad because I have had that happen a few times and it was with the same brand and type of wine and the ones that the cork was dry and crumbled didn't taste so well it had tasted sour.

This happens. Do your best to get what you can of the cork out. Pour the bottle through a fine seive or if you have some cheese cloth into a large glass container. If all else fails, the cork peices will float and you can just use your finger to get the rest out.

Don't worry, just enjoy the wine from a friend.

It was a bad cork most likely. Soak the bottle in warm water and what is rest of the cork will come out and you can pull it out all the way.
