I was an officer for several years before I was permanently disabled and I am now a wife of an officer. There are good officers and bad ones. Unfortunately it is the actions of the bad ones that get the most notice.
Officers makes sure that the laws set out by each state or followed (or they should at least). They should never profile and treat each person that they come in contact with, with the same dignity that they themselves would want to be treated with. There are times, however, that a situation turns bad and steps have to be taken to ensure the safety, 1st of the public and then the officer.
Some officers do think that just because they have a badge that they are better then everyone else. They are wrong however. These officers can cause teens to hate law enforcement and can end up getting others hurt because they are nothing better then overgrown bullies. They cause communities to hate and resent even the officers that are nothing like them.
Good officers, those that care even for the people that they have to arrest (and yes there are officers like that), have an opportunity to be role models for kids and adults. They don't use their position to get favors or to intimidate people. They are able to council people and difuse bad situations. Good officers are respected even by some of the worst criminals because they treat each person as just that a person and do not pretend to be judge and jury.

By the way they enforce the law, and by the way they treat people while performing their duties. Are they impartial ? Do they treat people courteously? Things like this are considered, when deciding whether they have a positive, or negative influence on the community.

Well, community policing for one..getting out there and putting there face and services out there. Educating the community to help them protect themselves and be more involved and informed. I am a cop in a small community that is rapidly growing. We get out there..we talk to our citizens. We encourage community involvement and participation.. and most of all we treat our folks like people.

I know that my husband has helped many criminals turn their lives around. I think it just takes one good interaction with an officer to help change peoples image of cops. Even hard criminals have come back to thank my husband for being kind and treating them like a human being. Most cops are good people with big hearts that is why they do this thankless job.

Police officers must be examples of good citizens. People will become scalawags if policemen will join them. Thus, good cops prevent bad people from operating in their area.
