Applications for Citizenship

All applications received since 1st November 2005 need evidence of English language and of life in the UK.

We are processing new applications and already have new citizens who have demonstrated their knowledge of Life in the UK.

To help you prepare for the life in the UK test and further information, you can now visit this site http://www.lifeintheuktest.gov.uk/

You will have to spend a few years legally living in the UK before you can become a British Citizen. The absolute quickest way is to marry a UK citizen. The next quickest way is to start your own business here (considerable $$$ needs to be transferred to UK), or to come here to work for a company. After around 4 years or so on a work visa, you will be allowed to apply for indefinite leave to remain in UK. If granted, a year after that you can apply for citizenship. The decision to grant citizenship is at the discretion of the Home Secretary, and is not guaranteed even if you fulfill all the requirements to the letter.

Generally if you want to come to UK to work (work visa) you will need an employer to sponsor you. The employer will have to show that they could not fill the post with British/EU Citizens. The work visa is tied to the employer - if you quit you cannot legally work for anyone else.

You should talk to the British Embassy in the States - they should be able to advise you further.

Good luck with that. My friend's parents worked in England for many years, made plenty of money, sent their children to English schools & universities, and still they were denied citizenship.
