When running or walking or on the elyptical, doing any cardio, etc. is it possible to get your heart rate TOO high? or is it the higher your heart rate the more calories are burned?

Yes it is possible to get your heart rate up to high. If you work out on a regular basis your body is probably accustom to the hard work outs. However, if you jump up one day after months of sedentary life style, not only your heart rate can jump up there to fast, but blood pressure, shortness of breath, feeling of faintness, or actually fainting.

Most people have a maximum heart rate - the rate reached when you are performing at the highest intensity. The rate plateaus at that point and does not increase any further. It settles into that pace. As your body becomes better conditioned, that rate will actually decrease. An elite marathon runner's resting heart rate may be less than 40 bpm and his maximum heart rate may be only 85-90. When there is a malfunction or deformity in the heart it may exceed the maximum rate. This usually ends in death.

If you have asthma, respiratory illnesses, anaphylaxis going on...then maybe yeah it can temporarily go a bit too high.
But the rest of what you said makes sense too.

That is one of the reasons that make it wise to see your doctor before you start a rigorous exercise program.
