Illuminati refers to a group that consider themselves to be enlightened. It often includes scientists and others who have knowledge and power that can help to control the world. It is believed that they have the power to create a new world order. The belief is that they plan to create a single government and eliminate many from the face of the earth.

It is considered to be part myth, although there were real groups that did exist. Some believe that is part of a conspiracy. Historically most of the groups that did exist seemed to die out many years ago. The Illuminati from the book is mostly fiction, although it does have some facts that are based on truth or at least myth that was believed to be true at one time.

Illuminati comes from the Latin to seek illumination. It refers to a secret society who's main purpose is the continuing search for scientific knowledge. Back in the dark ages, scientists were vilified and regarded as in pact with the devil. All science was seen as blasphemy against the church so the great minds of the day had to meet in secret to exchange ideas. That is the story of how it came to be that I am familiar with.
