First of all....NO ONE, not even a DVM (like me) can answer that question without first knowing the EXACT weight and medical status of your puppy. You don't even mention its age. Some rat terriers are less than 8# when fully grown...others are closer to 20#. The dose varies widely between THEM, and yours is only a pup.
Second of all, you're actually planning to take the word of anonymous people on the Internet who have no verifiable medical training for a medication dosage???!!! I have seen many absolutely WRONG dosages advised in many different threads....this one included. The people who answered don't even know if your pup is 2# or 10#....or if it's maybe only 3 weeks old.
Please call your veterinarian for the proper dose. It varies depending upon reason for use, and the general health condition of your pup. Although generally safe in most cases, it can have serious adverse effects if used incorrectly. And like I said, the dosages listed here are potentially dangerous. It CAN indeed be overdosed.
To any "Vet techs" out there....you should already know that it is ILLEGAL for you to offer specific medication dosages without direct guidance by the DVM under whom you practice to do so, and only for his/her own patients. You can face fines, legal action by the pet owner, and disciplinary action by your board of licensure. You can even lose your license to practice. If you are an unlicensed technician (i.e. an assistant), you can be charged with practicing without a license.

to the DVM: the only way a rat terrier can be 8 pounds is if he is not pure-bread or he/she is malnourished. i have/had 4 and they were all over 25 pounds. i've seen many more but never any under 15 pounds. im talking full-grown here... i think you've mistaken the breed for a smaller dog. rat terriers are classified as a medium breed dog, not a small dog like a silky or yorkie. and besides.... benadryl is ok to give to your dog. cant tell you dosage tho, check with your vet

The first question I would have as a vet tech would be why does he need it? The bad thing about Benadryl is if you're using it to calm him down it could backfire and actually make him more hyper so I'm hoping that it's to help with allergies. Ruffian is correct though, it's 1mg per pound so he would definitely be in the children's benadryl range (12.5mg pills). Start with a half twice a day and increase accordingly never exceeding 1 pill twice a day.

The dosage is 1mg per pound of body weight. So a 5 pound dog would take 5mg. You can give it 2 times a day but you might want to check with your veterinarian to make sure your puppy can take benadryl.

First of all, benadryl isn't harmful to dogs... I foster dogs and I have 20 puppies and so of them don't like car rides some have allergies... All of our vets say depending on what you are using it for just use your better judgment.... For example if you want them to sleep just start out with a low dose and work your way up until you achive a good result...

I would play it on the safe side and give him only half of a 25mg. pill. If nothing has changed give him the other half. beyond that makes me nervous do to he's really small and it should not take alot.
