First of all, calm down people who don't believe in getting the ears cropped. It is a personal choice and condemning anyone here is not going to change their point of view. Cropping should be done between 9 - 12 weeks old. The reason for having them done within this time period is due to cartilage growth in the ear. If too much cartilage has formed, the ears will be difficult to get to stand if they do at all. When considering the cost, you do NOT want to be cheap on this one. Your dog will be put under anesthesia during the procedure. Make sure the vet does pre surgery blood work to ensure your dog has no underlying health issues that would make the surgery more dangerous. Also make sure he/she is monitored during surgery. Ask questions..... Make sure that follow up rappings are included in the cost. Do they use a scalpel or laser to crop the ear? Will it include an overnight at the vets office, if so, does someone check on the animal during the night. Will they give you a halo collar to keep your dog from scratching the healing ears and ripping out stitches? What type of anesthesia will they use (some vets are using anesthetics designed for newborn babies requiring surgery. They have low side effects and your dog will wake faster after the surgery). What time can you call the vet to check on your dog? Can you bring them his/her own food as not to risk undue stomach upset. Will they prescribe an antibiotic post surgery to prevent infection (NO people pain killers are typically not prescribed, the only real discomfort associated is itching)? When I had my dobs cropped the cost was around $325. But I went to a vet that specialized in show dog cropping. He was VERY good and well worth the $. If you’re in Ohio, let me know and I'll give you his #.

i find it funny how some people complain about cropping/docking dogs but yet fully allow or commend friends and family for piercing their noses or nipples or putting plugs in their ears. Kinda hypocritical i think. Anyway, about the cropping, THE C, above is pretty on the money. IT is true, you do not want to go too cheap on this procedure. For my dogs, it usually goes from 200-400 depending how fine a cut you want and who the surgeon will be. Also, make sure it is done somewhere between th 9th and 16th weeks of life. Also, if you can and have the time, find a post to place between the tips of the ears to have them fully erect whne you finally remove all the tape.

I just dont understand why people want to do this to a dog ? It seems very cruel to me we dont chop peoples ears off so what is the difference so your dog can look "pretty" ? Well, I think dogs look cute and pretty with their floppy ears that is what they was born with and that is what they should die with .
My vet will not crop ears or do the tails unless its a medical emergency she does not believe in it.
Those dang show people that do them shows things its a big deal and it has it to be done to me them people shouldnt even be allowed to put on shows when you make the owners start chopping off dogs body parts.
If your going to change the look of your dog why even bother getting a pet at all ?
I am the type of person on here that gets upset when people assume things but this one subject I will say my peace on because its a cruel inhumane thing to do to your pet unless its a medical reason for it to be done

OUCH!! Really look into this process before you make any decide to have it done. Cropping ears on dogs is very painful and sometimes does not even work!!! It is only a cosmetic procedure and not for any medical purposes!! So when should you do it? I would say never.....enjoy your puppy because they grow up fast and don't torture him/her! Make your own decision, and research!

I'm not quite sure how much it would cost to get the procedure done, but I'm near positive that it wouldn't be cheep.
You'll probably get this answer a lot... Talk to your vet. They'd definately have the best answers. But I would talk to him/her sooner rather than later. I'm not too sure, but I think that it would work better if you did it younger.... but keep in mind side effects... ^^ good luck

Amber is completely correct in that it is only cosmetic. It is required for showing but otherwise optional. It is uncomfortable for the pet and always keep in mind, they may never stand. As for time constraints, they do not have to be four months old, the younger they are the better chance you have of getting them to stand although there is still no guarantee.

if your puppies ears are not already done, don't crop them. it is a painful procedure for any animal, there is not a vet in my county that will crop ears anymore. say yes to flop and no to crop.

Please don't do it. It is a cruel procedure that does no good. It is just done for a certain "look". I blame AKC for insisting that the ears and tails be done in order to show them. If they would stop insisting on having the ears and tails done, people would stop the cruel surgery.

Cropping ears, and tails is extremely painful for the animals... and so is declawing cats.
Would you do that to your child?
