1)C'est la vie:
literally "It is the life", is a French phrase usually translated as "That's life" or "Such is life". It is sometimes used as an expression in the English language to say that life is harsh but that one must accept it.
2)C'est la vie:
something that you say when something happens that you do not like but which you have to accept because you cannot change it. I've got so much work that I can't go away this weekend. Oh well, c'est la vie.

It's translated "Such is Life", and in French the spelling is "C'est la vie" You say it when you want to express a feeling of helplessness in life, or something that can't be changed. It dismisses the topic of conversation, and helps you to move on to another topic.

but jeni: you do not say it like that at all!!! That's the way foreigners say it! you say it:
- like the letter C in the french alphabet, or C in the english alphabet with a trailing off of éhhhh (like you over there) - for c'est
- la, simply, like when you're singing la, la, la, la - for la
-letter V from the english alphabet
