they are "encouraged" to do that by their religious leaders. encouraging through guilt
i meant. they are taught that unbelievers are their responsibility and their guilt fuels them to preach to their friends.

Every denomination thinks that they have the "TRUTH". Instead of looking at the many similarities between denominations they spend all their time nit picking over the tiny differences. Remember what Jesus said about picking a speck out of someone's eye when you have a plank in your own? This is the real life application.
At some level everyone understands that there are more similarities than differences between denominations. So, they greatly exaggerate the differences to the point that they begin to accuse other denominations of bizarre beliefs that don't actually exist. It's a sign of insecurity with one's own beliefs. If you know what you believe and you are strong in your faith you will have no desire to accuse others of wrong beliefs.
The biggest problem in Christianity is Christians attacking other Christians instead of accepting them. The Bible is the mind of God. No human can completely understand the mind of God. We can each understand some small piece, the piece that we are destined for. Every denomination has some things absolutely correct. Every denomination has some things absolutely wrong. The best we can do is to love another and try not to argue too much.

I take it that someone is trying to convert you to their religion. Although it can be frustrating when you are happy with the religion you have chosen for yourself, you have to understand where they're coming from. For instance, most religions think that people who believe in any religion besides their own are dooming themselves to eternity in hell, or something equivalent. In their minds, everyone else has it wrong and they have to save them! The best you can do is tell them you appreciate the fact that they care, but that you are satisfied with where you are right now. Best of luck!

People have always tried to challenge my beliefs. What disturbs me is the fact that they try to disprove something that they know nothing about. How can anyone who has only studied one viewpoint argue against all others?
“One country, one ideology, one system is not sufficient. It is helpful to have a variety of different approaches. We can then make a joint effort to solve the problems of the whole of humankind”
- The Dalai Lama -
Eldude: Conversion is not at all a part of the Buddhist faith. We achieve Nirvana through self-betterment, not recruiting followers. We are not to share the Dharma unless asked.

Most religions preach that theirs is the only way to get to Heaven (or the equivalent). If you believe in something else, then, regardless of what it is, you are going to Hell. When people try to change your ideas, they are actually trying to help you, to save you, even while being obnoxious about it. Theoretically, you should be grateful.

Well....first of all, those hard core push-you-till-you-break have two points to them.
1.) The love a lot, and want everyone to be saved in what they believed is saving them.
2.) They feel the power and want to share.
Also, you have those who put down other religions, and that is because - and i really believe this - they are so insecure in their own religion and the faults and lack of faith that the only way they can justify it is, well, to put down others.
To each their own, love all, and accept all!
Peace!

I think sometimes people are excited about their beliefs and want to share them with people. I don't think it's right for someone to try to push you into changing your beliefs but I think most people mean no harm by it. If they are happy they want you to be happy, too. If it bothers you just tell them you understand they are excited about their beliefs but you are happy with your own so you'd appreciate it if they wouldn't bring it up to you anymore.

Because if a person rejects Jesus Christ, they will go to hell when they die. I don't know how else to say it. Christians care about the eternal destination of others. That being said, I don't go around telling people they are going to hell. If they ask me, I will tell them what the bible says. I care very much about others and their eternal destiny.

People like, like minded people.
Many faiths believe that you must convert people in order to get to heaven or your next step to Nirvana.
My faith believe that I must tell people about my God and leave the conviction up to them. Pressure just breaks down bridges, communication builds.

The more ppl that believe as they do, will prove to that person that their theory is correct. No one likes being wrong and to those religious types, wrong means they have waisted their time. It means death to them which is something they fear the most.
