so far don h seems to get it but most others not. spirituality can be a compassion for your fellow man, an understanding of the human condition, rather than an allegiance to a religious dogma. and we non believers can be amongst the most pre-disposed to those kind of traits

sorry lex080 but you make it sound like religion is there then to apologise for the way life and death is for all of us, irrespective of the type of faith. maybe offer a sweetener of something thereafter..

the world would be a better place if we all recognised that we are here, together, now and once we die for whatever reason, our influence on this world has probably gone, so we should try to do the best we can for oursleves and one another while we are in this world

Because people of a particular faith tend to be slightly more religious than the rest of us, and they understand that spirituality is given a more coherent shape if it exists within organised religion, rather than outside it.

The kind of vague spirituality that most agnostic people subscribe to is extremely vulnerable to shocks and stress; if you believe in some sort of higher power or spiritual force, but don't believe in any particular religion, then when things go totally bad for you, the only consolation you have resides in the strength of your own personal belief. You can't look to tradition or existing Scriptures, because you reject all that stuff as dodgy. But tradition and revelation are what spiritual beliefs are composed of; you can hardly call yourself a Hindu if you don't know the Bhagavad-Gita, just as you can't call yourself a Christian if you don't accept that Jesus rose from the dead.

Spirituality that refuses to assume any definite form will tend to be blown away when life deals you a really crappy card. Strong ideas of God or divine providence help people to deal with crises; weak ideas crumble in the face of life's disasters.

Incidentally, in case you have the mistaken impression that I think that we ought to follow some sort of religion or other, please note that it doesn't follow from anything I've been saying that we ought to believe in any particular faith, or indeed any spirituality of any kind at all.

Some believe that there are spirits everywhere. That everyone is dealing with spirits everyday. There are some spirits that are only out for evil and if a person doesn't know that and know how to recognize them, then they are in trouble, spiritually. So, those who believe this way don't think people of no faith aren't spiritual, they think they're just leaving themselves wide open for the wrong spirits to have access to their lives.

Some of the most spiritual people I ever met have no particular faith.

Many of the least spiritual people that meet say that they are Christians. They don't act like Christians but that's what they say.

Love and blessings Don

I'm not sure that is entirely acurate. I as a Christian, however, by nature have concern about people following after spiritually destructive things. For instance, demons are spiritual, Satan is spiritual, etc...they are spirits and do things in the "spiritual realm".

That's just the way they see things but that is not right all the time, well atleast not in my view. Maybe those with a faith dont have spirituality themselves!!!

I don't understand, how can you have no faith but be spiritual? Are you really trying to say religious rather than faith?

Please elaborate.

Just because a person doesn't follow an established religion doesn't mean they don't believe in something.

I believe you can be spiritual and not religious. Not all of us Christians are close minded people.
