Yeah, good question, ever heard of checking to see if the seats down before you plop your posterior down on it. I mean who sets on something without looking at it first?

The difference is what happens to each gender when one is in a hurry. If you're a guy, and you really have to pee, and the seat is in the wrong position, the worst that can happen is that you get drips on the toilet seat, which, hopefully, you'll then feel the need to clean up--mildly icky and annoying.
For a woman, if she's in a hurry and the seat is in the wrong position, she'll be facing the other way, and thus won't see it, and she'll end up falling in--really icky and fairly dangerous. So it is a bigger deal for women.
Actually, though, I think the seat should be left in the position that's best for whoever uses that toilet the most: at a guy's house, even female guests should leave the seat up when they're done, and everyone should leave it down in a woman's house. If a couple uses the bathroom, they can work out a deal between themselves.

Women see leaving the toilet seat up as part of a pattern of behaviour, rather than an individual action. If women insist on the toilet seat being down, it isn't actually about the toilet seat, but rather about all the other cleaning-up-after-themselves things that men should be doing, but women are unfairly left to do.
You are right though about the toilet seat demand itself being irrational. For two reasons:
Firstly, it is just as fair for women to have to adjust the seat before use as it is for men to.
Secondly, most toilets HAVE LIDS. Hygene dictates that you should close the lid on the toilet when you are not using it, rather than just leaving the seat ready for the next person to use.

No, it is more than that and it is a simple answer. We ask the men to put the seat down for a single reason. Have you ever sat on a toilet and fallen right inside? I mean literally had your behind touch the inside of the toilet feeling the coldness of the water? It is not a comfortable experience. When the seats are left up and we do not notice, we sit and boom..next thing we know, out bare behinds are inside the toilets and our behinds are deep in water. We hope and pray that the men have mercifully flushed or you know now what we are sitting in. That is why we ask for men to please put the seats down.

Believe it or not, I never nagged about it because it doesn't help the situation and it's so petty. If I have to get up at night to use the bathroom I just make sure the seat is down. During the day if I see it's up I put the seat and the lid down. Men are men and I'm sure some women's habits irritate them.

well unless u have pets that jump up on the seat to visit you while you brush your teeth or you have 'butterfingers' with small items in the bathroom,,,,,,,,,,,,,,both will end up in the water..and hopefully everyone in your household flushes.....other than that you gotta put the seat down to take a poop unless you like sitting on cold ceramic that has sticky dried fecal matter and pee and having it stick to the back of your thighs. We all know that commonly the plastic seat and ceramic bowl are both white, if it is in the middle of the night, most ppl dont turn the light on,,,so you think your sitting down on the seat..when you go and the seat is up....you sit on the ceramic the cold ceramic.
well what you could do is just take the seat and lid away, and nobody can use it..... see how far that gets you LOL maybe then it might seem more practical to just put it down...the part about touching a toilet seat,,,,,,,,,well we all can wash our hands! before and after using

I know of three reasons (1) toilet bowls aren't usually that clean, but even if it is clean it's still just plain ugly in there and we don't want to see it when there's a perfectly good lid to cover it (2) we don't like to have to touch the toilet seat to lower the lid (yuck) (3) Have you ever sat down on the rim of the toilet bowl (without the seat being down)? I have, on way too many occasions - once is more than enough. You practically fall right in. Just lower the seat already. If you say yourself it's not a big deal to just put the lid down, then put the lid down. Little things like this show us you care: )

Good point! I think that as women we find it gross that men prefer to leave the seat up because when a toilet is not in use, you shouldn't have to look at all the insides, and having the seat up just exposes it all the more. Personally, I like to have both the lid and seat down when it's not in use. It just looks better!

Most of the time we are the ones cleaning it, so I think it wouldn't kill you to show some consideration and put the toilet seat down. If you walk into a just cleaned bathroom and the toilet seat is up, it just looks junky.
Pick your battles, obviously most women want a man that will put the toilet seat down, isn't there something more important to fight about!!

I live alone, but I still put the seat back down. Force of habit, I guess. I've lived with women before.
As someone said, we really should look before we sit. But I still think it's common courtesy to lower the seat, especially since men, too, sometimes need to sit. It's no big deal to raise or lower it as needed & keep the toilet covered when not in use.

I think it's more a matter of being aware of if it's up or down. I have needed the toilet during the night, half asleep, and landed on the part below the seat. It's a rude shock. Very few guys have ever had that experience. So I think that's why women get so upset.
